Persuasive Writing

Persuasive Writing

Yesterday Room 3 and 4 did some persuasive writing to explain why our group deserved a box of Favourites. The first thing we did was got into groups of four and we got 20 minutes to write a persuasive piece of writing about why we should win a box of Favourites. After the 20 minutes was up a group went up one at a time to share what they had written, my group (Libby, Troy, Leah and I) went second. Miss Jury recorded our speech.

Once everyone had shared we got sent outside for a run while Mrs Hancock and Miss Jury discussed who deserved a box of Favourites, (there were two boxes of Favourites so two teams could win.) I don’t mean to sound competitive but I really wanted to win, but Aylah’s group (Sam, Kaleb, Hollie and Aylah) won one box and the other box got shared with the rest of the class.

When they introduced persuasive writing to us, Mrs Hancock and Miss Jury held up two boxes of Favourites and if we wanted it we had to write a very good piece of persuasive writing to win the boxes of chocolates. They said that the group with the best persuasive writing will win the box of chocolates. We had to do the persuasive writing because Room 3 and 4 have to write proposals to the board for enviro, room 4 are asking for bees and my class are asking for lots of things.

After we had finished we opened a google doc and put all the things that we learned about persuasive writing. We learned that in the introduction you need to put who, what, where, how and why. Also that the first paragraph has the strongest idea, each piece of persuasive writing needs about 3 or 4 main ideas. A piece of persuasive writing needs language features like strong and powerful adjectives, emotive words, rhetorical questions, present tense, facts and statistics, etc.

Writing persuasive speeches is very interesting and fun, I think that doing some more persuasive writing for different things will help me learn a lot quicker.

Science Fair

Science Fair

Why I picked this topic
We picked this topic for science fair because one of the hardest stains to get out is the tomato sauce stain. Also mothers have a very hard time getting these horrible tomato sauce stains out so we compared products from Vanish to Sprite and picked the best one.

What was the most interesting part of this project - why
The most interesting part of this topic was because Vanish did not work as well we thought it would, in fact it was the worst product we used. Also we was not surprised that bleach worked the best, but we learned that bleach also as well as cleaning but also wrecks the cloth.

What was the hardest thing about the investigation - why
The hardest thing was figuring out what to use instead of a washing machine because if we used a washing machine the products would have mixed, so we ended up using a scrubbing brush. Next time we think we should use something else instead of a washing machine and a scrubbing brush.

What would you do differently next time - why
We think next time we should find a better solution of cleaning the stains instead of a washing machine and a scrubbing brush. Also we think that instead of using cloth for the tests we should use actual white clothing.

We went to the science fair on the 9th August with my class and Room 4 to look if we got anything. Unfortunately we got nothing but it was fun making it.

Scientific Writing

This week we have been creating our science investigation, but we did not know the parts of a science investigation and how to write it up. So Mrs Hancock taught us the proper way of writing up our science investigation, we did an egg experiment to learn how to write it up.

Egg Experiment

Aim: My aim is to find out what happens to an egg submerged in vinegar.

Hypothesis: I believe that the egg will bounce and the shell will dissolve, based on this information the acetic acid in the vinegar will dissolve the eggshell made of calcium carbonate. And it makes a chemical reaction.

Equipment:
Plastic cup x1
White Vinegar
An  Size 6 Egg

Method:
  1. Put the plastic cup on a flat surface.
  2. Place an egg in the cup.
  3. Pour the white vinegar in the cup until the egg is submerged in vinegar.
  4. Wait for four days.
  5. After the four days see what has happened.

Results: I took the egg onto the grass to test what the vinegar had done to the egg. I held the egg about 15 centimeters off the ground and let it fall, it bounced a few times then stopped, but when I dropped it about 1 meter off the ground and it cracked.

Conclusion: Overall my hypothesis was correct because I thought that the eggshell will dissolve and it would bounce. It was cool seeing the shell disappear. My main finding was the chemical reaction, when the acetic acid (in the vinegar) and the calcium carbonate (the eggshell) combined it creates a chemical reaction and causes the shell to come off.
