Survival Swimming
On Wednesday Room 3 & 4 (Year 7 & 8 classes) went to the Stratford pools to do survival skills. There, Emma (lifeguard) and Ashley (swimming teacher) taught us how to stay safe in the water. Ashley taught us how to throw a rope to someone in the water, and Emma taught us the survival position, how to take clothes (and life jackets) off and back on, in the water, and how to swim in a group.
When I was with Ashley, we paired up. I jumped in the while my partner (Aylah) held the rope. The first instruction was to act like you’re drowning, then she told the others how to hold the rope and throw it. When our partner threw the rope I had to grab hold of the rope and let our partner pull us in.
When we were with Emma we got into two groups, girls and boys. The first thing we did was put some life jackets on and jumped into the water, the safe way: feet first. Then Emma told us to form a circle and put our legs in the middle, in the circle (to hold onto each other for the circle and the line, you had to hold the person under the armpits) we had to make our way from one side of the pool to another. Still in our groups we formed a line and made our way across the pool. Next we had to try not touch the bottom of the pool while we taking our life jackets off, and the same with clothes.
I have learnt how to pull each other out with the rope, also how to do the survival position. After the survival lessons I felt a bit scared of the water.
