Scientific Writing

This week we have been creating our science investigation, but we did not know the parts of a science investigation and how to write it up. So Mrs Hancock taught us the proper way of writing up our science investigation, we did an egg experiment to learn how to write it up.

Egg Experiment

Aim: My aim is to find out what happens to an egg submerged in vinegar.

Hypothesis: I believe that the egg will bounce and the shell will dissolve, based on this information the acetic acid in the vinegar will dissolve the eggshell made of calcium carbonate. And it makes a chemical reaction.

Equipment:
Plastic cup x1
White Vinegar
An  Size 6 Egg

Method:
  1. Put the plastic cup on a flat surface.
  2. Place an egg in the cup.
  3. Pour the white vinegar in the cup until the egg is submerged in vinegar.
  4. Wait for four days.
  5. After the four days see what has happened.

Results: I took the egg onto the grass to test what the vinegar had done to the egg. I held the egg about 15 centimeters off the ground and let it fall, it bounced a few times then stopped, but when I dropped it about 1 meter off the ground and it cracked.

Conclusion: Overall my hypothesis was correct because I thought that the eggshell will dissolve and it would bounce. It was cool seeing the shell disappear. My main finding was the chemical reaction, when the acetic acid (in the vinegar) and the calcium carbonate (the eggshell) combined it creates a chemical reaction and causes the shell to come off.
