Wearable Arts
Two weeks before Tech Week we had to fill out a sheet that had four options for tech, wearable arts, go Karts, 3D printing and cooking. We had to pick our favourite choice and hand it in. A week later we found out what group we were in. I was in wearable arts with: Aylah, Jess, Charna, Hollie, Libby, Pascoe, Arnika, Xanthe and Miss Jury. A few minutes afterwards we headed off with our groups and planned what we were going to do this week. Our group designed our costume for wearable arts. Some one also lent us a UV light.
Monday
Monday we had finished our design, the costume is a glow in the dark peacock. The first step of our costume was to cut the milk bottles (for the tail feathers) into rectangles and wash them because they smelt bad. Once we had dried the rectangles we cut slits in them. Later, after we had finished cutting the rectangles we painted them white. Also the glow in the dark paint arrived in the mail. I couldn’t wait for tomorrow.
Tuesday
Tuesday was the most exciting day of the week because we got to go shopping for materials and more paints. The first shop was Mitre 10 to get some dowels for the tail feathers. Next was Spotlight. We thought that there would be quite a lot of glow in the dark material but there wasn’t. We found a few the glowed, also we found some glow in the dark paint. The last shop was the 2$shop and bought a neon green flower necklace. Then we stopped for lunch then went back to school. Back at school we drew a name out of the hat instead of fighting over who’s our model, it ended up being Pascoe. We also had to cut the dowels in half and painted the white.
Wednesday
Today Kerry, Miss Jury's’ cousin came to help us sew the top and start the skirt. The skirt had the glow in the dark material we bought from Spotlight. We cut the material into leaf shapes, big and small. We also started the hat which has a beak. The hat was made out of paper maché, firstly we had to glad wrap the top of Pascoe’s head so the paper maché didn’t stick to her hair and so it fitted her comfortably. While a few people were paper machéing Pascoe's head and few of us painted the dowels and the tail feathers green.
Thursday
Thursday was a day about sewing and putting stuff together. We sewed the leaf shaped material onto the skirt, Kerry came in again and continued helping us. Today we started the top. The top was sleeveless, it was made of white material painted blue. We continued to paper maché Pascoe’s hat. Also we had to cut more milk bottles because there wasn’t enough, we hot glued the dowels onto and semicircle with heaps of glue. Another thing was that we started to paint the eyes for the tail feathers. We had to paint the flowers blue, the flowers were from the neon green necklace we got on Tuesday.
Friday
Friday was unfortunately the last day for Tech (Friday had come so quickly!) but it was the most busiest. The first thing we did was glue the feathers and the eyes onto the dowels. We used the neon green flower necklace for the tail. Also we glued the eyes on the tail feathers, the mask was the one that still needed a lot of work because we had to paint it blue and hot glue the head feathers on. To test the costume in the dark using the UV light. It looked amazing!! By the end of the day we had nearly finished the whole costume, the thing that was not finished was the hat. I didn't’ want this week to end.
I can’t wait until October for the Taranaki Wearable Arts competition and next term for another week of tech!!!
